Flagging a bike route

Drem to Athelstaneford Walk/Cycle

1/3 miles (each way). Easy going. Short climb onto the ridge.

Like many people, the restrictions of the past year have led me to explore more my local area. This walk (or off-road cycle) from Drem to Athelstaneford up onto the ridge topped by Kilduff Hill offers spectacular views north of Gullane and beyond, with the fantastic Saltire Memorial and Flag Heritage centre at Athelstaneford parish church as its destination.

If you choose to park your car in Drem station car park, walk over the platform bridge and exit the station from the southern, Edinburgh-bound platform. On exiting the station, turn right and walk up the slope toward the railway bridge. Do not cross the bridge but squeeze past the gate on your left and walk south up the concrete farm track to Kilduff Hill.

Stop at the bench by the wall in front of the wood to admire the view. Then turn left and carry on along a green lane east for just under half a mile until you take a path signed for Athelstaneford on your right. From there it is a further half mile to the village and parish church. Just retrace the route to return – there is an option to take the path north to Sunnybank but beware the walk from there to the station is half a mile along a road, which though quiet has no pavement.

Of course, it will be so much nicer when the Drem-Gullane path is built. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to walk safely off-road all the way from Gullane to Athelstaneford?
